SOPs vs Standards: What’s the Difference?

We often hear operators ask, "Aren't SOPs and brand standards the same thing?" Not quite. Think of SOPs as the parents and brand standards as their children.

Let’s break it down:

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are detailed, internal documents. They explain how tasks should be performed: step-by-step, consistently, behind the scenes. Think: how to make a bed, prepare a buffet, or clean a bathroom.

Brand Standards are the guest-facing version. They are the visible, measurable outcomes of your SOPs. Think: "The guest bed must be turned down with a chocolate on the pillow," or "Tables must be reset within 60 seconds of guest departure."

Why it matters:

  • SOPs ensure operational consistency.

  • Standards ensure brand consistency.

  • SOPs are written for staff. Standards are written for guests (and auditors).

A solid SOP leads to strong standards. And when your team understands both, you deliver a guest experience that can be audited, trusted, and repeated.
